Hundreds enroll in new College Opportunity Program through MGM

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KLAS) — More than 250 MGM Resorts International employees have enrolled in the first semester of the company’s College Opportunity Program. The program provide free college access for employees through the Nevada System of Higher Education.

The program allows employees to earn a degree online through seven Nevada institutions, free of charge for all credit hours.

NSHE Chancellor Thom Reilly said the College Opportunity Program has had a positive impact on NSHE’s degree-granting institutions by pushing them to grow their online education programs.

“Online education was an area where we as a system needed to expand and the MGM College Opportunity Program has been an incentive for that growth,” Reilly said. “These enrollment numbers are certainly encouraging and as word gets around, I expect interest and participation in the program to continue to grow.”... WATCH: Carolinas coast braces for flooding, hazards from Dorian

(AP) — As Hurricane Dorian blows off the coast of the Carolinas, forecasters are predicting high storm surges and drenching rains that could trigger flooding and unleash environmental hazards in areas still recovering from last year’s Hurricane Florence.

The National Weather Service said hurricane warnings were in effect Thursday for the Carolina coasts up to Virginia, with a “potentially life threatening storm surge” of up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) around the North Carolina-South Carolina line.

Coupled with high tide, the storm’s arrival Thursday is expected to push water up the mouths of coastal rivers, causing low-lying areas to flood. There could also be up to a foot of rainfall across much of Eastern North Carolina, raising concerns of flash flooding well inland... Read More

Nevada readying return to state-run health insurance website

LAS VEGAS (AP) — After relying on the federal HealthCare.gov website for five years, Nevada officials are preparing to switch back to a state-run insurance website where people can shop for and enroll in health coverage.

The online insurance marketplaces are a hallmark of former President Barack Obama’s health care law, allowing those who aren’t covered by their employer to sign up for insurance.

Nevada had originally opted to run its own website under a partnership with Xerox, but after it was plagued with technical problems the state switched to the U.S. government-run site in 2014.

The Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, the state agency that oversees Nevada’s marketplace, says people can start logging into their accounts on the new website, nevadahealthlink.com as of Wednesday.

Consumers can start comparing health plans on Oct. 3 and enroll on Nov. 1... Read More
