Race to Honor Fallen Officers
News

LAS VEGAS -- It was one year ago that Metro officer James Manor was killed in a car crash while responding to a call for help. Since then, five other law enforcement officers from southern Nevada have been killed in the line of duty.

On Saturday, the Peacekeeper's Kids 5K Run will raise money for those fallen officers' children.

Every May during Police Memorial Month, the students, faculty and staff of Marc Kahre Elementary invite the community to join them in a tribute to their school's namesake. Metro motor officer Marc Kahre was killed in the line of duty in 1988.

This year, six more law enforcement officers killed in southern Nevada were also honored.

A rose given in the name of each officer to a member of his family, including the wife of officer Trevor Nettleton and their young son.

"I say to them, each and everyone of these families from the past year, that we will never forget them," said Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

At the same time across town, hundreds of officers and law enforcement supporters raced to register for the first annual Peacekeeper's Kids 5K to raise money for the children of fallen officers.

"The money goes toward the fallen officer's kids birthdays, Christmas, and also college,"said race founder Officer Melissa Lardomita.

"It's something I want to be a part of, trying to help out these families of fallen officers," said Metro officer Adam Schaefer.

Officer Schaefer knew two of the officers killed this past year personally. It gives him peace of mind just knowing this organization and others support the families of fallen officers.

"Just in case, God forbid, something should happen to me in the line of duty, I know my family and kids will be taken care of," he said.

"I think its very important that we as a community support their families and let them know their father, husband, or friend will be in our hearts forever," said officer Lardomita.

In a fitting tribute, the first annual Peacekeeper's Kids 5K will start and finish at Police Memorial Park at the base of the permanent memorial honoring all of southern Nevada's fallen officers.

The race starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning. You can still register for the fundraiser before the race.
