Threading Businesses Pop Up Around Las Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS -- It's not too hard to find empty store fronts and closed businesses around the Las Vegas valley. However, there is one type of business that is not only surviving but actually thriving.

It is called eyebrow threading and seems to be the latest way to remove unwanted hair. One business owner told 8 News NOW that she just opened three months ago and is already looking to add three more shops.

"Everybody's like 'what is threading?' Threading is an ancient middle eastern art to removing unwanted hair. All with this cotton thread," explains Sandra Dayal, Bollywood Salon owner.

She didn't think her business would last through the recession. Luckily, she was wrong.

"With the economy, with threading, it's really popular right now." The cosmetic treatment is so popular, threading shops are popping up all over the county. According to Clark County's Business Licensing office, they issued licenses to nearly 230 cosmetology businesses just this year. Some of them were to threading salons like Dayal's.

"We don't trend eyebrow trending but anecdotally we've seen a lot of those shops going up," said Cara Roberts, Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

Roberts said cheap commercial rental rates may be attracting more small businesses right now.

"The good news is that we are seeing more than 200 businesses that have opened their doors in the last year. And, that's great for our economy," she said.

Dayal says threading is another option to waxing treatments which are more expensive. "A lot of places, they are doing $12 to $20. And, here we're $8 to $10."

An important factor in these tough economic times.
