Residents shocked following officer-involved shooting in "quiet and safe community"

People who live in one Summerlin neighborhood were shaken up Thursday after a man was shot during an officer-involved shooting.

The shooting involving Metro Police happened near Atla and Pavillion Center drives around 9:30 a.m Thursday. The incident caused Sig Rogich Middle School and Palo Verde High School to be placed on lockdown for hours.

Residents were shocked the incident happened in what they describe as a "quiet and safe community."

"Had a little bit of a heart attack, you know, and the first thing I thought was shooting in the school -- you know," said local parent Valerie Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says she panicked after she received word that there was police activity near her son's school.

"I called him immediately you know and I was like, 'hey what's going on? Are you ok?' You know, of course, my heart dropped," Gonzalez said.

According to police, they were attempting to take a man wanted for several violent felony crimes into custody. He was in a home on Poplar Leaf Street, but the man refused to surrender peacefully.

"At this time the suspect exited the residence in a vehicle from his garage and he rammed detectives' vehicles multiple times in an attempt to escape. At this time, officers fired upon the suspect," said Captain Yasenia Yatomi, Metro Police.

The man whose identity was not released was transported to the University Medical Center with critical injuries.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

"I called some of the moms that I know from here, and they were you know, also freaking out and worried, so I was like 'everything is good apparently everything is outside of the school' which is still kinda like by surprise cause this is a very nice community," Gonzalez said.

Metro Police is expected to release more information about the police shooting in the next 72 hours. This is the third officer-involved shooting for Metro since the beginning of the year.
