Speedway, Concert Promoter Host Charity Event

 

A local charity and the organizer of the Electric Daisy Carnival are combining to hose a charity golf tournament next month.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities will host its annual golf tournament, Drive For Charity Presented By Insomniac on June 10 at TPC Las Vegas.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. followed by a scramble shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Foursomes cost $800 and include golf for four, cart, unlimited range balls, continental breakfast, awards lunch, golf shirt and gift bag. Single registration is $200 and includes the same goodies.

TPC Las Vegas is located at 9851 Canyon Run Drive in Las Vegas.

An exhibit dedicated to children battling cancer and other diseases will go on display this week at Village Square.

The open-air retail and dining center will be the new home to the traveling Hearts of Las Vegas exhibit. The display is a collection of 10 artistic human-heart sculptures.

Artists created the works based on the theme: The Heart of a Child. The sculptures were sponsored by local businesses to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

The hospital and Village Square will hold an opening ceremony for the exhibit at 11 a.m. Friday. The display will be up until July 31.

Charity Game to Raise Money for Mentally Ill

 

A group of Metro Police officers will be putting aside their badges to pick up a basketball for an annual charity game.

The officers are part of a team known as the Emissaries. It is made up of police and correction officers assigned to the Crisis Intervention Team. The team is called out for situations involving people in possible mental or emotional crisis.

The Emissaries will play against the Harlem Ambassadors Monday at Cimarron-Memorial High School. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

The money raised from the event will benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southern Nevada.

Admission to the game is $9 for adults and 47 for children under 11 years old and seniors. Kids 5 years old and younger can go for free. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or from any NAMI board member. 

DJs Collect Pajamas for Kids in Need

DJs Collect Pajamas for Kids in Need

Local radio DJs collected pajamas all day Friday as part of the annual DJs for PJs drive.

They started collecting the pajamas at 6 a.m. at four Kohl's stores around southern Nevada, including the stores at Charleston Boulevard and Durango Drive, Durango Drive and Deer Springs Way, Blue Diamond and Arville roads and 215 beltway and Valle Verde.  

The bedtime clothes will be donated to kids in need in the Las Vegas valley. Last year, more than 8,000 pairs of pajamas were donated to the cause and then distributed to dozens of local charities.

 

School Holding Fundraiser to Help Teacher with Cancer

 

A local charter school is doing what it can to help one of its teacher diagnosed with cancer.

Coral Academy of Science is hosting a fundraiser Sunday for kindergarten teacher Megan Emery, who recently went through surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in her lung.

“I have seen amazing support from our staff and faculty in raising funds for Megan’s medical bills, but she needs more help.” said Ercan Aydogdu, Executive Director, Coral Academy of Science. 

The fundraiser will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at Go-Kart Raceway at 7350 Prairie Falcon Road. The entrance fee is $20 with a flyer that can be found at drivetosurvive.webs.com.

There will be a go-kart tournament with prizes awarded for the top three times and a sports memorabilia silent auction.

Village Square Plans Arts & Eats Festival to Benefit Three Square

A shopping center that has gone through a major renovation is holding an event to raise money for a local charity.

Village Square at Ft. Apache Road and Sahara Avenue is holding its first Arts & Eats festival April 13 and 14 to benefit Three Square. The festival will include live music and art displays by local artists.

There will also be food and drinks from several restaurants and businesses in the revitalized shopping center, including Bachi Burger, Cold Stone Creamery and Chicago Brewing Company.

People can sample all the food by purchasing a $20 restaurant pass. All the proceeds from the passports will go towards Three Square Food Bank, which fights hunger in southern Nevada by collecting and then distributing food through local food banks.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The art displays and music are complementary. 

Charity Golf Tournament Benefits Children's Organization

An upcoming charity golf event will take place on one of the best courses in southern Nevada.

Golf 4 The Kids will benefit Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation. The tournament will take place May 17 at TPC Las Vegas.

The tournament is limited to 144 golfers. Register at www.golf4thekids.org. The tournament will feature a $1 million hole-in-one, closest to the pin, longest drive and putting contests, as well as many raffle prizes. Proceeds from the tournament will be split equally between Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation.
