Meadows Kids Holds Bake Sale for Animals


A group of local second-graders are working together to raise money for animal adoptions in the sweetest of ways.

From noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the students from the Meadows School will hold a fundraising bake sale for the Nevada SPCA. They will be joined by rescued dogs from the shelter.

Last year, the students raised more than $7,000, primarily through the sale of items costing under $1, Nevada SPCA officials said.

Meadows School is located at 8601 Scholar Lane.

Dates for Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Announced


The dates have been announced for this year's Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at the Tournament Players Club Summerlin.

Golfers will be playing October 14 through October 20. The 2013 tournament will award full points as part of the annual FedExCup series.

The tournament will feature 132 PGA Tour professionals competing for a $6 million purse. The winner will take away more than $1 million.

All the proceeds from the tournament will go to Shriners Hospitals for Children which provides pediatric care at 22 hospitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Time to Help Families in Need of Thanksgiving Dinner

Helping families in need of a Thanksgiving meal in southern Nevada can be as easy as going to the grocery store.

HELP of Southern Nevada is readying the annual 97.1 The Point Turkey-Thon, a program which provides 1,200 Las Vegas families with a Thanksgiving meal, with donation opportunities at Albertsons from November 15-17. 8 News Now is a sponsor of the drive.

Donations of frozen turkeys and fixings also will be accepted from November 15 to 17 at three Albertsons locations:

  • 575 College Drive (Thursday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • 9725 S. Maryland Parkway (Friday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • 1650 N. Buffalo Drive (Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Those wishing to donate money for the Turkey-Thon online can do so at www.helpsonv.org. Make sure to put “Thanksgiving” in the subject line on the donation page. A family of four can be fed with $35.

Kids Festival to Benefit Shoe Charity


A local charity that provides shoes to kids in need will be the focus of a benefit this weekend.

Kidville will be hosting the second annual Kids Fest to benefit Goodie Two Shoes. The festival is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Kidville at Tivoli Village. The early childhood development center will be open to members and non-members. There will be a live concert from the students in the Rockin’ Railroad class, craft projects, gym games, yoga and pizza.

The event is $10 or a new, tagged, boxed pair of sneakers for the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, which provides kids in need in Las Vegas with a new pair of shoes and socks.

Restaurant Offers Donation to HELP of Southern Nevada

A southern Nevada charity is teaming up with a popular restaurant to raise money for people in need.

HELP of Southern Nevada is working with Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza for a special donation period. Patrons that bring in a designated flyer will have 20 percent of the proceeds from their meal donated to HELP of Southern Nevada.

The donation period is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 19 at the West Sahara Avenue location of Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, 6500 W. Sahara Avenue. The restaurant will also be giving free gift bags to those who participate.
