RTC Bike Event Registration Opens

Registration recently opened for one of the most anticipated cycling events of the year, set for September 2013.

The sixth annual RTC Viva Bike Vegas, put on by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) will take place Saturday, Sept. 21.

The event will offer routes for all skill levels, including a 103-mile Gran Fondo, a 60-mile Metric Century, and a 17-mile ride. All routes will begin on the Strip, and the longer routes will ring the valley, taking riders into the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and near Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

“We envision making Viva Bike Vegas the ultimate one-day cycling experience on the West Coast,” said Fausto Pinarello, president of Pinarello cycling, the bicycle manufacturer and official sponsor of Viva Bike Vegas.

Young Poets Compete for Scholarship

Young Poets Compete for Scholarship

Some of Clark County’s finest young poets will square off Tuesday for the chance to win a scholarship.

Thirty students selected from more than 1,000 entries across Clark County will perform their finest poetry recitations in the Poetry Out Loud semi-finals. The participants represent 15 local schools, and the winners will advance to the Nevada finals in Reno on March 16 to compete for a $1,000 scholarship and $1,000 for their school’s literary programs.

Poetry Out Loud encourages kids to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation. The state winner will compete at the national level in Washington D.C. for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes.

The event takes from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Charleston Library Theater, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.
