LAS VEGAS - The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas held its annual meeting Sunday.

The meeting is often an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and achievements, but the latest conflict between Israel and Hamas took center stage.

Rabbi Felipe Goodman led the annual meeting with a prayer he says is standard during times of distress.

"I just think that it's a little bit of comfort to know we have some faith that can reach out to God and ask for special protection in these times of distress," said Goodman.

Devra Weiss said she came to learn more about what's going on in Israel and to find support from her community.

"We have family and friends there.  There are places under attack that I've walked myself," said Weiss. "Just the idea that you're going about your business and you can hear a siren and have 15 seconds to get to safety.  I can't even conceive of that."

The president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas Elliot Karp said many of the people at the meeting felt helpless so far away from loved ones.

He says they can pray and donate to help the people displaced.

Weiss says the annual meeting came at a time when she needed it the most.

"Coming together you know that there are other people who feel the way that you do, you can get inspiration you can get strength."

Officials say the death toll in Gaza rose to at least 80 on Sunday.
