LAS VEGAS -- Family and friends of Cory Childers honored the 21-year-old and two other shooting victims at a vigil at Avellino Park in Henderson Thursday night.

Childers, 33-year-old Veronica Caldwell and her daughter Yvonne Reyes, 18, were all shot and killed Tuesday night by Caldwell's 21-year-old husband, police said. The incident unfolded during a domestic dispute between Caldwell and her 21-year-old spouse.

“My son was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Alyse Childers-Wiley, Cory Childers' mother.

Childers-Wiley's son was dating Reyes. Officers said the three victims were leaving the apartment complex in the 2200 block of South Fort Apache Road when the husband opened fire.

Metro said the husband then turned the gun on himself.  Police said he is in the hospital but not expected to survive.  However, two family members of Caldwell and Reyes told 8 News NOW the suspect has died.  8 News NOW tried to get some clarity from the Clark County Coroner's Office, but it hasn't released that information yet.

“Things happen for a reason, but you want to question this reason, but you can't ask that question,” said Joseph Wiley, Cory's stepdad.

“There is a meaning for everything. He loved Yvonne, and now they'll be together forever,” said Childers-Wiley. “I'm battling stage four cancer. I have been for seven years now. Maybe my son wanted to be an angel to look over me, I don't know,” she said.

Alyssa Rodgers, a woman who said she's the cousin of the two women victims said her niece witnessed the deadly shootings, but Reyes protected her.

“Yvonne saved my 7-year-old niece's life. She shielded her and let her get away,” Rodgers said.

“They were just really good people,” said Rodgers. “Things shouldn't have ended this way.”

According to her Facebook page, Reyes was a student at Odyssey High School. Her mother, Caldwell, worked for the Clark County School District since 2006.
