Darling Tennis Center Launches 2012 Season With Barbeque, iPod Giveaway

 

Tennis season launches Friday night at Darling Tennis Center (DTC) with a community gathering.

DTC will kick things off from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a barbecue and an iPod giveaway in an effort to get local kids and adults interested in tennis. (Where to find the center.)

"Tennis Night In America" is being held at the 23-court tennis facility and will feature a barbecue, games and youth activities. Each person who signs up for any tennis activity this season will be entered into a giveaway to receive a new iPod. The giveaway will take place at this Friday's event.

"It's recreation for adults. Teens get to be on a team," Jeff Foley, DTC's Director of Tennis, said.

Summerlin Half Marathon Arrives in April

 

Runners can look forward to the Summerlin Half Marathon on April 14, starting and finishing at the JW Marriott.

Registration costs $95 until April 12 and $100, if available, on April 13 at packet pickup at the JW Marriott. Signup is available by clicking here.

Race organizers say the course is a scenic loop running through four of Summerlin's best trail parks and it will include Strip views.

The JW Marriott is offering participants, family and friends a $99 room rate for race weekend. The Organization for Autism charity will benefit from the race.

Free Bowling for Good Grades

Boyd Gaming wants to reward students for doing well in school. It is starting a new “Making the Grade” program which gives kids free games of bowling for good grades.

The program is open to elementary, middle and high school students. The offer will be good at bowling facilities at the Gold Coast, Sam’s Town and Suncoast. Students will get two free game passes for every A earned in the most recent grading period. They will also get one free game pass for every B earned.

To redeem the offer, students must bring in their latest report cards and get a membership with Kidz Klub. The club is a free bowling rewards program.

The game passes can be used whenever lanes are available between 2 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a limit of one free game per day. Passes will expire after six months. There is also a charge for shoe rentals and additional games. A parent or guardian is required for children 12 years old and under.

Tickets are expensive at $400 per person, though the event is for charity.

It may be a tough ticket in these tough economic times, but Saturday's Stand Up For Skate Parks event in the amphitheater at Red Rock Resort will help ensure that kids in need have a little something extra to keep them busy.

Free Yoga Class for Salutation Nation

Yoga enthusiasts will get a chance for a free class outside at Tivoli Village in September.

Salutation Nation is a celebration of International Yoga Day. It is a way to encourage people around the country to enjoy the ancient practice in an outdoor setting on the same day. The yoga clothing and accessory company lululemon is sponsoring the free class on September 10 at 9 a.m. The class is for all levels and ages. Participants should bring a yoga mat, water and a towel.

 

Two Weekend Events Planned for City Pool

The City of Las Vegas is offering two events for the whole family at the Pavilion Center Pool.

The first is Friday, August 5. The pool will be showing the movie "Shark Tale" at 6 p.m.. People are encouraged to bring the whole family and lounge chairs to watch the film. It will cost $3 to get in and light refreshments will be provided.

The second event is Saturday, August 6. The All City Swim Meet will be held at the pool starting at 9 a.m. Kids involved with the city, North Las Vegas and Clark County  summer swim programs will be part of the novice meet. Bleacher seating will be provided. Admission is free. Food and drinks will not be permitted on the pool deck.
