Free snowshoe hikes offered at Mt. Charleston

Free snowshoe hikes offered at Mt. Charleston

Free snowshoe hikes at Mt. Charleston are being offered through the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMRNA) Education Department until the end of March.

A naturalist will outfit hikers with snowshoes and lead them on a one-hour hike of about a mile on a trail rated easy to moderate. Hikers experience the snow while discovering how the plants and animals survive the cold. Recent participants viewed animal tracks in the snow on the mountain.

"It's pretty active out there," said Jennifer Falkof with SMRNA. "If the naturalist sees something she can show you, she certainly will."

Snowshoes are one size fits all and it is recommended hikers be at least 6 years old.  For safety reasons, no dogs are allowed on hikes.

Participants should wear clothing that protects their heads, hands and feet from snow, cold, and wind. These interpretive walks are provided for individuals, families and groups every Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.
