A local high school senior who won a prestigious national award will be recognized locally Wednesday.

The Las Vegas City Council will honor  Meadows School senior Garrett Gosse for being named the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman Male Athlete of the Year at meeting that will begin at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, 400 Stewart Ave.

This leadership award honors young men and woman who excel in learning, performing and leading in the class room, on the field and in the community. Gosse stared in football, basketball and baseball at the Meadows, and also maintained a grade point average of 4.72.

Meadows senior Garrett Gosse earned national recognition last week as the Wendy’s High School Heisman winner.

Gosse took his place as the 18th annual male recipient of the award at the High School Heisman awards ceremony in New York City. Wendy’s honored him as the national winner, which honors exceptional students who exhibit excellence in academics, athletics and community service. Gosse and the female winner were chosen from nearly 48,000 applicants:

Gosse is a triple threat as a Class 2A first-team all-state selection in football, basketball and baseball. As quarterback of his team, Gosse compiled record-breaking statistics, including 448 passing yards in a single game. As Vice President of his class, he organized a tutoring program at an underprivileged school and volunteers his time mentoring younger students. After graduation, Gosse plans to continue playing football at a top university.

The possibility of a Tiger Woods appearance looms at Las Vegas’ PGA Tour stop as tickets go on sale for the event.

Tickets for the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, are on sale now. The weeklong charitable tournament kicks off Sept. 25 at TPC Summerlin. Woods is contemplating adding a tournament to his fall schedule as he prepares for the Presidents Cup event in November in Australia.

Professional Football Player Sets Up Camp for Kids

A former NFL player and current player for the United Football League's Las Vegas Locomotives is holding a football camp for kids this summer.

Lauvale Sape is holding a camp featuring current and former NFL players and coaches. One camp is for kids seven to 14. The second is for kids 15 to 18. The camp for the younger kids will not be full-contact, but the older kids will play full-contact football. Kids in the camp will get one-on-one training to learn the fundamentals of the game along with the importance of setting goals on and off the field. 

The camp is June 9 - 11 at Ed Fountain Park at Decatur Boulevard and Vegas Drive. Registration is open now. The fee for ages seven to 14 is $200. The fee for the older kids is $275.

Angel Park Offers Express Tee Times for Faster Golfers

Angel Park Golf Club offers up an incentive to move golfers along their courses: play fast, get a good tee time.

Angel Park now provides five Express Lane tee times on one of its two 18-hole golf courses each Saturday morning to golfers who commit to finishing 18 holes in 3 hours, 45 minutes or less.

Although the exact times vary with the season, currently the five Express Lane tee times are from 7 am to 7:28 am.

"One of the things we consistently hear throughout the golf world is that it takes too long to play," said Greg Brockelman, Director of Golf at Angel Park. "In an effort to combat this issue, we created Express Lane. The reality is that most people live very busy lives.

Football fans have the opportunity to meet legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana this Friday at JO Sports! Montana will be in Summerlin during the evening to meet fans and sign autographs. Las Vegas Tennis Center Receives Major Distinction

LAS VEGAS -- Some big names, including Andre Agassi, were on hand Wednesday for the announcement that a Las Vegas training center has been named as a USTA Certified Regional Training Center.

The Amanda and Stacy Darling Tennis Center is the 11th center in the country to have that distinction.

"It is great to see USTA Player Development expanding its reach throughout the country, making it easier for top junior tennis players to get good coaching right at home," said Andre Agassi.

USTA training centers have a record of identifying and developing tennis players.

"The Amanda and Stacy Darling Tennis Center is one of the finest facilities in the country and will give us a strong presence in the Intermountain area," said Martin Blackman, Senior Director, Talent Identification and Development, USTA Player Development, who oversees the USTA Certified Regional Training Center program.
