Mojave Max Watch Begins | Weather
While most everyone around the country will have their eyes on the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania on Saturday, people in southern Nevada will be watching for Mojave Max.
Mojave Max is the desert tortoise that is currently in brumation, which is a reptile’s version of hibernation. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Saturday, the public is invited to visit the desert tortoise habitat at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor’s Center to see a special display devoted to the southern Nevada native.
People can also sign up to predict the time and date that Mojave Max will emerge from his burrow, which is a more accurate predictor of spring in southern Nevada than the groundhog in Pennsylvania. Max only comes out when there is enough daylight and the weather is warm enough.
Each year students around Las Vegas valley schools are encouraged to enter the Mojave Max Emergence Contest. The winning student earns several prizes and a pizza party for his or her class.
