Kids in Need Get Free Dental Care

Kids in Need Get Free Dental Care

Children from across southern Nevada traveled to TPC Summerlin to see a dentist Monday.

The free dental clinic was part of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Golf Tournament. It is the fourth year TeamSmile has put on the event.

About 225 kids in need went to today’s free clinic. For some of the kids, this is the first dentist or hygienist they have seen. Dentists at Monday’s clinic say tooth decay is getting worse which is hurting children’s ability to concentrate.

"We see from baby bottle syndrome where it is rampant decay on the front teeth to rampant decay on the molars where they're having such excruciating pain. It is hard for the kids to take the time and spend time on schoolwork when they're having so much discomfort," Dr. James Frantz with Green Valley Dental Group said.

Race Starts at Sunset

Runners and walkers will be taking to the streets for the first ever Team Challenge Sunset Rock N’ Run event Saturday at Bruce Trent Park at the corner of Vegas Drive and Rampart Boulevard.

More than 300 people have signed up to either walk one mile or run a 5k/10k race as a fundraiser for the Las Vegas Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. The race is unique because it starts at 6:36 p.m., which is sunset.

The runners will get timing, a finisher medal, a raffle ticket and a t-shirt. The raffle includes vacation packages to Lake Tahoe and Laughlin. The finish line will feature a festival-like atmosphere with a live band and food vendors.

Free Screenings for Fall Risk

Free Screenings for Fall Risk

The Southern Nevada Health District is working with Nevada Geriatric Education Consortium to sponsor Fall Prevention Awareness Day with a series of fall prevention programs.

The health district has set up fall testing for seniors at centers around the Las Vegas Valley Friday. The testing starts at noon and goes until 2:30 p.m. The screenings are free. Those who test positive for being at risk for a fall will be referred to Stepping On a fall prevention program.

Every year more than one-third of adults 65 and older suffer some kind of fall. Of those, one-third is hurt. Research also shows people who fall are likely to fall again, and each fall increases the chance of seriously injury.

Man Accused of Robbing Women Outside Casinos

LAS VEGAS - Tyler Skochenko is locked up in the Clark County Detention Center for violently hurting and robbing two different women more than three times his age.

"When it's the elderly or children involved, when they're the victims and someone thinks they can prey on them because they're vulnerable, that they won't resist, that's what makes us work a little bit harder and attempt to take someone in custody," said Metro Police Officer Jay Rivera.

Rivera says the young mugger snuck up on his victims, pushed and shoved them and snatched whatever he could.

The first robbery happened at the Suncoast Tuesday around 6:15 p.m. The 70-year-old woman told police the attacker grabbed a gold necklace off her neck and ran through the parking lot.

Bachelors Up for Auction at Heart Event

Some of the most eligible men in Las Vegas will be on the auction block to help the American Heart Association.

The first ever Heartthrobs Bachelor Auction is set for Saturday at Tivoli Village from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the outdoor pavilion. Winning bidders will get date packages with their selected bachelors. Some of those packages include show tickets, helicopter rides, zip-lining and dining certificates.

Tickets to the event are $25, which includes a cocktail and drawings for other prizes. The whole auction is an effort to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association’s Heart and Stroke Walk/Run.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the nation’s No.1 and No. 3 killers. In Nevada, they are the No. 3 and No. 4 killers. Money raised during the walk and run will go towards cutting-edge research and getting life-saving information into the hands of doctors and patients.
