CCSD Seeks Imput on Budget from Summerlin Residents at Town Hall Meeting

CCSD Seeks Imput on Budget from Summerlin Residents at Town Hall Meeting

Clark County is facing some tough decisions when it comes to the new round of budget cuts facing the school district. In order to make the best informed decisions about how to proceed, CCSD is hosting a Town Hall meeting to get feedback directly from the residents of Clark County. The thoughts and feedback you put forth at the meeting will in turn be used to help the district develop budgets for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 based on projected shortfalls and the governor’s proposed budget.

If you want to have your voice be heard in this matter, come out to the Summerlin Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, March 15th from 6 to 8 pm at Cimarron-Memorial High School, 2301 N. Tenaya Way, Las Vegas, 89128.

Signs of Life in Retail Real Estate Market

LAS VEGAS -- One of the many signs of the recession is empty storefronts. Retail vacancies were at an all-time high in Las Vegas last year, but those numbers seem to be turning around.

The strip mall at Sahara and Maryland Parkway doesn't look the same as it did six months ago. Two stores were empty, but now there's a subway. More stores and restaurants are relocating in other strip malls for cheaper rents.

Many shopping centers, like Village Square, sit 75 percent empty. But others are showing signs of a comeback.

"I felt even though with a bad economy, it was still a good business to open up out here. With the demographics, there wasn't many of my types of places," said Robert Levy with Levy's Bagels & Deli.

Last April, Robert and Marie Levy started a new business making bagels from scratch. They picked an empty restaurant space at Sahara and Buffalo for location and price.

Businesses Struggle with High Gas Prices

LAS VEGAS -- Skyrocketing gas prices may be forcing people to cut back a little, but for some local small business, it means coming up with a whole new game plan in order to stay afloat.

Gas prices are really affecting the bottom line for delivery-based businesses, including Desert Rose Florist and East Side Pizza. Both business owners say they are doing everything they can to not pass that added expense on to consumers.

"It's crazy. We've seen already from $80 of filling up to $120, so it's been a big difference for us and that's like every four days," said Desert Rose Florist owner Talia Ofier.

Ofier says for right now they are just toughing through the extra price of gas while losing some profit. But she is not sure how much longer she can hold out. She's worried she'll have to up the delivery charge.
